Domestic Violence Awareness Month: 3 Ways to Help

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. Domestic violence has no place in this world, and we’re taking a stand to end it. Throughout the month of October, we urge you to be a part of the solution, raise awareness, take action, and get involved.

How You Can Get Involved

1. Use your voice through social media. In this digital age, we can make a big difference through social media. There are a number of ways to raise awareness online. Simply begin by having conversations and educating people about domestic violence. This will help eliminate the stigma that surrounds them. Need somewhere to start? No More Project has created a campaign for 2020 and they have free social media assets for you to download.

2. Get involved in your community. Search for local organizations and get started within your own community. Our firm’s partner, Dorothy Fait, has been an active board member of the Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation since its inception and is the current Treasurer. This month, they are holding their first virtual 11k to support victims of domestic violence and their children. Our firm will be participating and you can too!

3. Extend support to survivors. Offer support to those you know experiencing an abusive relationship. Donate materials or money to organizations that provide resources for survivors. Continue educating yourself and raising awareness.

If you find yourself in a situation involving domestic violence and you are concerned for your safety, there is help for you. The National Domestic Violence Hotline has trained advocates that you can speak to confidentially by calling 1-800-799-7233 or online.

At Fait & DiLima, LLP, our hearts go out to families who find themselves under these circumstances. We will advocate for you and secure the protection you need to feel safe.
